Thornton Academy junior outlines Girl Scouts 'Explore Your Future' career event

Wynter Williams, a junior at Thornton Academy and a Girl Scouts of Maine member, presented to the Saco City Council on May 19 about an upcoming career-event Gold Award project called "Explore Your Future."
Williams said the event is an open-house career fair at the McArthur Library scheduled from noon to 2:30 p.m., featuring about 17 booths and interactive stations for middle-school through college-age attendees. "This project is really important to me to help spread information and knowledge to girls, middle school through college ages," Williams told the council. She said the event is intended to address underrepresentation of females in certain industries by providing career information and personal contacts.
Councilors asked logistical questions about attendance and presenters; Williams said the event is drop-in format and that career representatives were lined up. Councilors offered support and the city administrator said staff would try to advertise the event on the city's social media and web page.
Williams said the Gold Award requires at least 80 hours of project work addressing a community root cause; this project targets female representation in the workplace.
