Van Buren County commissioners on May 5 approved a $5,000 transfer to cover coroners' or medical-examiner autopsy expenses, citing that autopsy requests are made by the attending doctor or district attorney and costs can be unpredictable.
The commission moved $5,000 from fund 101 to an expenditure line for autopsy costs after staff explained the county had experienced higher-than-expected bills. “It's unexpected expenses, and we don't know when it's gonna happen or how many,” a staff speaker said. The clerk recorded a unanimous roll call in favor of the transfer.
Staff clarified the decision is administrative: EMS personnel do not decide whether an autopsy occurs; the coroner or doctor requests it in suspicious cases, and the DA may request an autopsy in certain circumstances, staff said. Commissioners approved the transfer to ensure funds are available to cover those expenses through the end of the fiscal year.
