Joliet mourns Sergeant Hollis Weller; council holds moment of silence

City staff opened the meeting by saying, “It’s with a very heavy heart that I share the tragic news of the passing of Sergeant Hollis Weller,” and then invited Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans to address the council.
“Sergeant Hollis Weller was killed in an automobile accident in Beecher, Illinois,” Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans told the council, noting Weller had served the department for 20 years and leaves behind a wife, Kathleen, and three children. Evans described Weller as “a valued and highly respected member of our department” and asked the public to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
Chief Evans also thanked multiple agencies for their support following the accident, including the mayor and city manager, the Joliet Fire Department, the Will County Sheriff’s Police, the Shorewood and Beecher police departments, the JJC Police Department, and members of the Illinois State Police. He singled out Lieutenant Colonel Jason Bradley and Major Dave Keltner of the Illinois State Police for assistance with the Joliet Police Traffic Unit and for escorting a procession back to Joliet.
Mayor Pro Tem closed the remarks with a brief moment of silence for Sergeant Weller.
The announcement and the chief’s remarks took place during the pre-council workshop; no formal council action was taken beyond the moment of silence.
