Van Buren County acknowledges $50,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant to upgrade county technology

Van Buren County officials told commissioners May 5 that the county has been selected for a $50,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to upgrade technology in the commission meeting room, the conference room and the Agricultural Learning Center.
Chris Binkley, who presented the item, said the award is not yet publicly announced but must be acknowledged so the county can include the money in next year’s budget. “It’s a $50,000 grant, and, basically, what it's gonna be used for is to upgrade technology,” Binkley said. He added that only three counties in the state received the award and that ARC does not require a local match on this grant. When asked, the meeting recorded the response: “No. No match. No. It's $50,000. There's no match.”
Commissioners moved to acknowledge the grant so staff could complete the fiscal-strength documentation required for the application and subsequent budgeting. The motion to acknowledge passed on a roll call with all commissioners recorded as voting yes. Staff said Chris Binkley will submit the required fiscal confirmation letter.
The grant is slated to fund building-technology upgrades only and will be formally announced by ARC at a later date, staff said.
