Longmeadow submits middle school schematic design to MSBA; DESE reviews special-education plan

School officials told the Longmeadow School Committee on May 15 that the district has submitted the schematic design for the proposed middle school to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and that the district has also submitted a special-education methodology statement to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for review.
The schematic design, officials said, includes floor plans, a detailed space summary listing rooms and square footage, and adjacency plans that together will help the MSBA and the district identify the full project scope and budget. "We successfully submitted the schematic design to the MSBA," a district presenter said during the project update.
The DESE review is required before the MSBA establishes and votes on the project scope and budget, officials said; the special-education methodology statement describes how the proposed building will deliver services and create inclusive environments for special-education students. School staff said they expect to return to town meetings and to the community ahead of a September public vote on the full project scope and budget.
District leaders also said they have distributed informational materials at town meeting and maintain an FAQ on the district website to inform residents about design choices and project timelines. No vote was taken at the May 15 meeting on the project; the committee said the project remains on schedule.
