Smyrna — The Smyrna Mayor and Council on Monday approved an amendment to the city code that extends the authorization and rate of the hotel-motel tax through Dec. 31, 2053 to align with the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority's financing plan.
City attorney staff and Ms. Robinson explained the amendment updates section 90-4502 of the Smyrna Code of Ordinances so the city's hotel-motel levy is consistent with state law and the authority's amended funding and operating agreement. The change extends the current authorization from Dec. 31, 2028, to Dec. 31, 2053, as allowed by state statute.
Under the city's agreement with the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority, a fixed percentage of hotel-motel revenues is paid to the authority; a portion is also transferred to the general fund to reimburse city costs. Staff recommended approval and council adopted the ordinance amendment unanimously by hand vote, 6-0.
Staff said the authority is planning major renovations and additions, including expanded exhibit space and a hotel, and the ordinance change aligns Smyrna's levy authorization with the authority's financing timetable. The council authorized the mayor to sign all related documents.
