The La Verne Beer Board deferred consideration of an on‑premise alcohol permit for Thai Louse Bamboo at 331 Suite 100, Walden Road, during its May 15, 2025, meeting after staff and board members raised questions about required separation from churches and schools.
Applicants Melvin Harris and Joyce Ratanat Wong appeared for the application. Harris told the board that, when the business initially applied, they had screened nearby churches and believed the closest was First Methodist, about 1.4 miles away: "we did screen, the local churches, and I was under the impression that we had to be within 200 yards." Board staff noted there may be a church immediately adjacent to the building and cited the board's 200‑foot distance requirement for on‑premise permits.
Given the ambiguity, the board offered the applicants the option to supply a professional survey showing distances to surrounding churches and schools. The board made and seconded a motion to defer action until the next meeting to allow the applicant to submit the survey; the motion carried on an affirmative vote.
The applicants accepted the deferral and will return with a survey to verify whether the proposed location meets the board's distance requirements.
