McCarty Elementary staff on Monday described the school's eighth annual readout, a family reading event that the school holds to celebrate student literacy and to distribute summer reading packs purchased by the district's Title I program.
Principal Sherry Fredericks and reading specialist Laura Reyes told the board the readout gives each grade a 30-minute block to read with families outdoors (or indoors in inclement weather) and that each participating student receives a free Scholastic pack containing 10 books at grade level, a reading journal, colored pencils and family reading activities. The school uses the readout to help combat summer reading loss by placing books directly into students' hands and by showing families how to use the materials.
Reyes said the readout began as a classroom activity and was expanded to a whole-school event. This year the school invited the public library to set up a table so families could learn about free summer reading programs and obtain library cards; the library also plans to stop by McCarty with a bookmobile over the summer.
Fredericks and Reyes said the event draws community volunteers and VIPs including district leaders and local first responders and runs rain or shine, switching to a gym-based "read-in" when necessary. The board acknowledged the program and several members said they and their families have participated in past readouts.
The presentation included a short TV segment about the event produced by a local station and photos of families participating. Readout organizers encouraged board members and families to RSVP for the Friday readout scheduled for this week; logistics will be decided in the event of rain.
