Advocates and residents urged Cleveland City Council on May 19 to finalize plans to relocate Fire Station Number 23 into a former CVS at 10022 Madison Avenue. “We desperately need a Fire Station Number 23 to have the deal finalized in order to allow them to move into the former CVS site,” Diab Darissa told the council during public comment.
Speakers said the existing station—built in 1953, they said—exposes firefighters to occupational hazards including lead and asbestos and argued the Madison Avenue site would offer safer, modern accommodations near an adjacent park and planned basketball court. “They serve our community minute in and minute out, and we have to faithfully…return that faith by serving their health and their interest,” Fauzi Badadore said.
Darissa and Badadore thanked Council Members Jenny Spencer and Danny Kelly for advocacy and urged city leaders to move the matter quickly so work on health and safety upgrades can begin. No administrative motion or council vote on the relocation appeared on the council’s public record during the meeting; speakers asked for the council and mayor to complete the transaction that would allow the station to move into the former CVS building.
Council members did not announce next steps or a timeline during the meeting. Advocates noted the proximity of a planned new basketball court and park improvements adjacent to the proposed site and argued relocating the station would benefit first responders and neighborhood safety. The address cited by speakers for the proposed location was 10022 Madison Avenue.
