The Eastpointe City Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously to require at least one meeting per quarter and adopted an amended 2025 meeting schedule during its meeting, with members saying the change will ensure regular training and planning even when no appeals are pending.
The measure matters because board members and city staff said quarterly meetings will provide consistent opportunities for training and coordination with a planned master‑plan update and could prevent long gaps between hearings. Chair Wilson moved the quarterly‑meetings proposal and members voted to adopt the amended schedule, with members naming January, April, July and October as regular meeting months going forward.
At the meeting, Chair Wilson said, “I make a motion that going forward, the zoning order pills has at least 1 meeting per quarter.” The motion received support and a roll call vote; Chair Wilson, Member Troutman, Member Barconi, Member Roscoe and Member Williams all voted “yes” and the motion carried. The board later moved to adopt the 2025 schedule as amended and a majority present voted to approve it.
City staff explained the change is intended to give the board regular opportunities for training and planning related to an upcoming five‑year master plan. A staff member told the board that historically the ZBA only met when there was an appeal and that the new building official expects the board to meet more often.
Board members and staff also noted a procedural clarification in the Eastpointe ordinance: decisions require a majority of the members present and voting, rather than a majority of the full seven‑member board. A presenter explained that under the city’s ordinance this means the board can act without delaying items until absent members return.
The vote to require quarterly meetings and adoption of the amended schedule were formal actions recorded by roll call; no other formal policy changes were adopted. Board members said the schedule could be adjusted if a large number of appeals required additional hearings.
A motion to adjourn passed at the scheduled end of the meeting.
