The Parsippany (Troy Hills) Board of Adjustment on Jan. 8, 2025 postponed the hearing on an application by the Islamic Cultural Center after the fire marshal determined the meeting room had exceeded its permitted capacity.
Board members said many people were waiting in the hallway and could not be accommodated. Steven Shepis, the applicant’s attorney, told the board the decision to postpone was not the fault of the applicant, the board or the public and asked for the earliest feasible alternative date and location.
Board staff said the application would be carried to Feb. 5, 2025 and announced that the precise replacement location and time would be provided once permissions were secured. Shepis told the board he consented to an extension of the board’s time to act, first through Feb. 28 if needed and then through March 31, 2025, to allow time to find a larger venue.
John Mills, speaking on behalf of two objectors, asked whether a replacement location was known; board staff said a location had not yet been secured and that notice details would follow when finalized. The board emphasized the other scheduled agenda items would proceed as planned and that only the Islamic Cultural Center application would be carried.
The postponement was taken to allow members of the public to hear the application in person and to permit anyone who wished to speak in support or opposition to be present.
