Steve Sodergren, executive officer, said the board "strongly recommend[s] students to wait until their degree is officially conferred before applying." He said applying too early can lead to a deficiency notice if the board has not received a transcript or program certification. Sodergren advised applicants to type information into the fillable PDF application to avoid errors and to include necessary coursework documentation or explanatory letters with their packet.
The board clarified proof-of-coursework expectations for recent graduates: students who graduated from an in-state marriage and family therapy or professional clinical counseling program on or after Dec. 31, 2018, should have completed most required coursework as part of their degree, with exceptions possibly for suicide risk assessment and telehealth training. The board said the same general timing applies to in-state social workers who graduated on or after Jan. 1, 2021. The presentation noted acceptable proof can include a letter from the school or completion of a continuing-education course, and applicants should consult the application instructions for the specific licensure pathway they will use.
On account setup, the board said students should create a Breeze account once they have submitted their registration application. Breeze is the board's online licensing system at www.breeze.ca.gov. The board noted a PDF with step-by-step Breeze registration instructions is available on the website and that a help desk is reachable at (916) 557-1208 from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Sodergren also explained the 90-day rule and its conditions: the rule allows students to begin counting supervised experience hours from their graduation date if they apply for AMFT registration within 90 days of graduation, are fingerprinted by the agency where they will gain hours, and retain a copy of the live-scan form to be submitted with their licensure application and completed hours to the board. He directed students to the board's website for more details and FAQs.
The board encouraged institutions and educators to support students through the licensure process with presentations and resources and to make use of the board's applicant-focused materials, including a "10 tips for a smoother licensing process" PDF available on the board website.
