City to replace amphitheater Bermuda with St. Augustine grass; first Friday events likely paused

Dan, Presiding official, said the initial Bermuda installation did not go deep enough into the soil and that “we started seeing a lot of dilapidated areas on the, amphitheater grass.” Staff recommended switching to St. Augustine, which they said performs better locally and requires less upkeep.
Staff estimated the replacement would be completed in the first or second week of July and warned the amphitheater — including First Friday events — may be closed for several months while the sod establishes. “That should be completed. I wanna say first or second week of July,” Dan said.
Commissioners were told turf remains a fallback if St. Augustine fails; staff cited concerns about heat and drainage with artificial turf and said they want to try St. Augustine first. The item was presented as an informational update in advance of project scheduling and any associated budget approvals.
