A proposal to establish a landscaping business with outdoor storage and a 40-by-60-foot garage at 32 Canterbury Street was continued by the Worcester zoning board of appeals to Oct. 27 to allow the applicant time to produce an engineered site plan and address neighborhood concerns.
Applicant representatives described a plan for a 40-by-60 industrial garage, a storage/staging area for trailers and equipment, material storage (stone, sand, mulch, loam) and a proposed 10-foot privacy fence to screen adjacent residences. Planner Victor Panak told the board staff was concerned about site constraint issues: vehicle maneuverability, placement of dumpsters, proximity to abutting residences and compliance with front‑line landscaping requirements; staff recommended the board continue the hearing so the applicant could provide an engineered site plan.
Neighbors at 33 Canterbury Street expressed concerns about parking spillover onto the street, the visual impact of outdoor storage and how materials such as mulch would be stored. Applicant representatives said materials would be new product stock (mulch, stone, aggregates) rather than on-site material processing and that much equipment would be stored inside the garage; they also said they were open to working with neighbors on screening and staging.
The applicant requested a continuance to Oct. 27 and the board approved the request. Staff and board members asked the applicant to meet with neighbors and provide a detailed engineered plan that addresses circulation, dumpster placement, fencing/landscaping and odor/stock concerns prior to the next hearing.
Speakers included Clay Williams (representing applicant Joseph Haddad), applicant representatives, planner Victor Panak and neighbors including Melvin Collins.
