Olympia recognizes middle school artists selected for 2026 Water Resources calendar

Public Works staff recognized middle school students whose artwork was selected for Olympia’s 2026 Water Resources Stewardship Through Art calendar during the council’s Oct. 21 meeting.
“We're happy to be here again for the seventh time to recognize the middle school students whose artwork was selected for our 2026 Water Resources Stewardship Through Art Calendar,” said Erin Conine, senior drinking water specialist in Public Works. Susan McClary, associate planner in Public Works Water Resources, said the project helps bring awareness to stormwater pollution prevention and water-conservation best practices.
Conine and McClary explained the contest solicited entries from public, private and homeschooled middle schoolers in Olympia, used stewardship messages to guide artwork themes and added supplemental educational information for each month in the calendar. City staff said calendars will be available at City Hall and will be distributed to students’ schools.
Council members applauded the student artists. Council Member Green said, “There’s some really fantastic stuff in here.” McClary and Conine introduced the students who attended the meeting: Navia Kandawol (Bay It and Trash/Pet Waste), Addie Kane (Don't Let the Water Run), Emily Edwards (Only Rain Down the Storm Drain), Sarah Shimoji (Fix Leaky Faucets), Eva Moore (Don't Be a Hoser, Use a Broom), Henry Bing White (Practice Bee-Friendly Yard Care), Amelia Gregoria (Water Landscapes Early or Late), Adelina Hernandez (Baguette and Trash/Pet Waste), Ashley Vasili (Use a Commercial Car Wash or Wash on the Lawn), Gaia Alphonse (Don't Let the Water Run), Robin Burnham (Rake a Drain), Indigo (Take Shorter Showers), and Miles Thomas (Don't Drip and Drive — Fix Vehicle Leaks).
Council members encouraged the students and noted the calendar’s educational value for neighborhoods and schools. After the recognition, the council invited artists and teachers to the dais for a group photo.
The recognition occupied the Oct. 21 meeting’s early agenda and did not involve a formal council action.
