The Nye County Board of County Commissioners approved $25,000 in program funding for Nevada Outreach—or a veterans assistance program that pairs direct financial support with case management.
What the money will do: According to the Nevada Outreach proposal presented to the board, the $25,000 will be used for direct financial assistance to qualified veterans and to provide full case management. The organization said funds would cover rental and mortgage assistance, utilities, insurance and other immediate needs that threaten veteran stability.
Public comment: Some public speakers, including representatives of veterans organizations, urged that established veteran service organizations be engaged and asked why the county was not routing the money directly to groups such as local VFW, American Legion or DAV. Nevada Outreach representatives said the organization conducts a DD-214 verification for each veteran client and that almost all funds would be distributed to veterans as direct aid; the nonprofit said $786 of its proposed budget is for personnel and that $24,212 is budgeted for direct client assistance.
Board action and oversight: Commissioners approved the request and noted there is a veterans-specific fund from which the county administers requests. The controller confirmed $131,000 was available in the relevant fiscal-year allocation for veteran-assistance funding. Board members directed county staff to continue standard grant oversight and reporting.
Vote and outcome: The motion to approve $25,000 to Nevada Outreach for the veterans assistance program carried by majority (recorded as unanimous in the meeting audio; motion made by Commissioner Jabbour, seconded and approved).
Ending: Nevada Outreach will proceed under a program funding agreement and deliver reporting to the county showing how funds are used; commissioners said they expect program-level reports and verification of client eligibility.
