The Brawley City Council on Oct. 21 unanimously approved St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church’s request for a street closure and waiver of city fees to hold its annual feast-day celebration on Sunday, Oct. 26.
City staff said the event will take place on Leonard Street from Cesar Chavez to Adams — a low-traffic block — with a closure beginning at 8 a.m. and reopening at 6 p.m. Staff estimated about 200 attendees and recommended approval because the fiscal impact and physical disruption would be minimal.
Parishioner Esther Martinez spoke for the church and asked the council to approve the longstanding religious and cultural event: “We've been hosting this event for many years. ... it's part of our religious, cultural religious practices,” Martinez said.
Councilmember Grass moved to approve and Councilmember Monita seconded. The council recorded a unanimous vote in favor with no nays or abstentions. Staff indicated they would provide necessary barricades and city support for a safe event.
