The Government Affairs Committee directed staff to pursue a flexible digital design element to complement — not replace — the existing city shield, and to collect quotes from designers. Staff described the element as a modern, readable mark suited for digital spaces and communications; it would not retire the official city shield or replace existing uses on signage, vehicles or uniforms.
City communications and design staff said the project would be a limited engagement (staff estimated a range roughly between $10,000 and $25,000 as an initial expectation) and that the work should ideally be completed before a planned website redesign so the new web presence can reflect the updated design elements. The project is currently unfunded for 2025; staff said options include identifying carryover funds, budget requests for 2027, or contingency funding, and that per purchasing policy they would obtain three quotes for the work.
Alder Lowe moved to authorize staff to pursue the design element and get quotes; Alder Ernie seconded. Committee members stressed the project should be done thoughtfully and not reduced to an informal contest or piecemeal approach. The committee approved the motion unanimously and asked staff to return with recommended quotes and funding options; staff noted that per purchasing policy the item may not require council-level approval but that staff would bring information back to the committee as requested.
No final design or contract was selected at the meeting.
