Beverly McFarland, representing Sunset City on the municipal coordination team for the 1800 North project, reported to the City Council Oct. 21 on construction progress, outreach and resident concerns.
McFarland said the coordination team includes representatives from Davis School District, MIDAS (referred to as MIDA in the hearing), local employers and municipal representatives and that the team is working to collect resident complaints and relay them to contractors and city staff. She told the council that field staff now route communications through the city so Nicole (the city office manager) can distribute updates to council members and residents.
McFarland described one recurring complaint: residents along the south side of 1800 North had expected underground broadband installations but instead found above‑ground utility boxes on private property. She said those residents were upset about the appearance and placement of the boxes. McFarland said the team has relayed that issue to the contractor and to the project’s broadband team.
On safety, McFarland said the coordination team discussed concerns about children crossing 1800 North to reach new or relocated schools. She reported that outreach and training for elementary students has already occurred (including demonstrations and scooter/relay activities) and that junior‑high training is forthcoming. McFarland said the municipal team is watching crossing‑guard procedures closely and advised that junior‑high students may require additional attention during the training rollout.
McFarland also described other project elements: contractors are finishing curb, gutter and storm sewer work on the south side and preparing to pave, and there are several groundwater ponds along the corridor that have required coordination on secondary irrigation connections. She encouraged council members to collect constituent feedback about the project so the municipal coordination team can relay it at future meetings.
Ending Council members thanked McFarland and asked staff to continue to relay resident feedback. Public‑safety and school‑district representatives will continue coordination on crossing training and construction impacts.
