The Washington Terrace fire chief told the City Council on Oct. 21 that the department ran 320 calls in the third quarter — 239 medical calls and 81 fire-related calls — and that year-to-date call volume is 1,075, with a projection to reach about 1,400 calls for the year.
The report said nursing‑home responses continue to represent a large share of workload: "the nursing home calls percentage we're sticking at that 20 it's 28.8, so roughly 30% call volume to the nursing homes," the chief said. The department’s staffing level remains 35 firefighters after recent hires and departures.
The chief described several recent fires tied to charging equipment and home systems, including incidents near the golf course on Bridal (400 South) and a malfunctioning furnace at a rental property. He warned residents about lithium‑ion battery risks and recommended using the manufacturer’s charger and following charging guidance for power tools and small batteries: "there still can be issues with them...make sure you're using the charger that comes for them from the manufacturer. And usually those chargers are designed to shut off once it's fully charged," the chief said.
The department held a recent open house with vendors and partner agencies, including Dominion Energy and Ogden Regional Medical Center; the chief noted good turnout and invited the public to a trunk-or-treat event with Ogden Regional on Oct. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the hospital’s back parking lot.
No formal council action was taken on the report. Council members asked no substantive follow-up questions during the presentation.
