House reaffirms teacher and state employee salary package, contingent on final budget

The North Carolina House on Oct. 22 passed a measure reiterating the salary increases the chamber included in its earlier budget package for teachers, state employees and law enforcement.
Representative Perez said the bill "solidifies our continuing support for our excellent salary package," including across‑the‑board teacher raises and increases to state employee pay. An amendment added cost‑of‑living adjustments for state retirement recipients.
Several members described the vote as a signal to the Senate to complete a comprehensive budget. Representative Willis urged the Senate to act so that raises appear in paychecks rather than remaining symbolic. Representative Frater noted the raises are contingent on passage of a current operations appropriations act and therefore do not become law until a final budget is enacted.
On second reading the House recorded 110 in favor and none opposed. The bill passed third reading by voice vote and was ordered sent to the Senate.
