Council member Katie Yaroslavsky joined civil rights and community members to hear how other cities are addressing perimenopause and to consider what Los Angeles can do to expand protections and support. "It's a hot topic. Council member Katie Yaroslavsky joined LA civil rights and community members to learn more about policy making on menopause. They heard what other cities have put in place and how LA can catch up," said Speaker 4 (Host).
Speakers described perimenopause as an underemphasized issue affecting many people and urged the city to gather expertise and consider policy responses. "The city has done some incredible work, on behalf of women. These benefits really reflect the city's acknowledgment of what our bodies and our minds go through," said Speaker 5 (Commenter). "We're here, at Lacey this morning to talk about perimenopause, which is incredibly important to half the population of people. Right? Perimenopause is something that doesn't announce itself in the same way, other parts of one's life do."
Speaker 5 added: "And the changes that women go through, when they hit often their forties, through to their sixties, are significant and, have been underemphasized for a really long time. So it's really important that we bring together experts to help figure out how the city of Los Angeles can do a better job of supporting women who are going through perimenopause."
A representative who said they were presenting work from the city of Melbourne urged awareness and legislative action: "I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to present the work the city of Melbourne is doing. It's just so important for all women who are going through menopause and periemenopause. But we need awareness, and we need to talk to each other about what we're experiencing and what we can do to push toward legislation, to try to make everyone aware and give more protection," said Representative, City of Melbourne (Speaker 6).
The transcript excerpts provided no specific policy proposals, ordinance numbers, or votes. Speakers called for further study, expert input and public awareness as next steps.
