The Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Carson will close to the public on Nov. 14 for interior refurbishment, and the City will install a solar-panel canopy in the library parking lot beginning Nov. 3, a library manager told the council during oral communications.
Library manager Victoria Nikolov said the interior work is estimated to take six to eight months, but a precise completion date will depend on construction timelines. The solar canopy installation is expected to limit parking and be completed by February 2026.
Why this matters: The MLK branch is a neighborhood resource for books, programs and computers. The closure and construction will change access for regular patrons and may push demand to other branches or services.
Concerns raised and staff response
Nikolov and councilmembers discussed unhoused people who often congregate at the library entrance. Councilmembers urged the library and public-safety staff to ensure secure fencing for the construction site, to consider overnight security and lighting, and to coordinate outreach services for people who are living on or near library property.
City staff and the mayor asked the library to work with the public-safety engagement team to coordinate monitoring and outreach during construction. The city’s public-safety team was referenced as already responding frequently to that location.
Ending
Library officials said the closure date is Nov. 14 and the solar-canopy parking work will start Nov. 3 and likely finish in February 2026. Staff said they would coordinate security and outreach while the branch is closed.
