Board recognizes Liberty Ridge and Mountain View students and staff for kindness and reading achievements

The board meeting opened with school recognitions highlighting staff and student accomplishments. Annette Bowen, principal of Liberty Ridge Elementary, described a staff-led book study using Deep Kindness by Houston Craft and introduced a new "Golden Elephant of Kindness" staff recognition award designed to celebrate consistent acts of kindness among faculty and staff. Bowen said the award is intended to recognize both spontaneous and sustained kindness; she described presenting the award to staff member Chelsea Ross Schiller as a surprise in front of students.
Chelsea Ross Schiller and a colleague, Alyssa (a teacher at Liberty Ridge), told the board the award "was a surprise" and that peer recognition helped them notice positive acts in daily school life. The principal and staff received flowers from the board as part of the recognition.
Amy Montgomery, principal of Mountain View Middle School, introduced seventh grader Kyla Kimball, who was one of the top readers in Washington state for a summer reading challenge organized by the Seattle Seahawks and a partner. Montgomery said Kimball logged 13,026 minutes of reading over the summer and received a custom Seahawks jersey and a game-day experience as part of the award. Kyla received a certificate and flowers onstage.
Board members thanked the schools for their presentations and praised the emphasis on character and literacy.
