Middletown school board president apologizes for meeting with administrators, offers to step down

President Estrada apologized during the Oct. 21 meeting of the Enlarged City School District of Middletown Board of Education for meeting with district administrators without first asking the full board and said he would accept whatever consequences follow, including resigning the presidency.
Estrada told trustees he had met with administrators to get information for the board but “did not ask permission from the board of education to meet with those administrators.” He said, “When that happens again, you are held accountable for it and I will accept whatever punishment comes my way deservedly.”
Why it matters: The comment touches on board governance and norms about contact between individual trustees and district staff. Estrada said the matter could result in his stepping down as president and that he is prepared to allow Vice President Romero to assume the role.
Board members asked for a motion to approve the agenda and moved on to routine business after Estrada’s statement. Estrada said he has 22 years of board service, 16 of them in Middletown, and that he would “continue to contribute for this community” whether or not he remains president.
Trustees did not take a public vote on disciplinary measures during the meeting. The comment came before a series of unanimous procedural approvals later in the session.
