The Tonganoxie City Council approved a motion to authorize the purchase of road-salt supplies for the 2025 winter season from Central Salt LLC for a maximum cost of $12,320.70. Staff recommended ordering 200 tons and noted that city crews have been managing stockpile quality issues; the public-works supervisor also repaved the salt barn to reduce debris in the inventory.
Staff said ordering under the county’s procurement arrangement allows the city to use the county’s quoted price and invoicing process. Councilmembers asked whether the county procurement applied; staff confirmed the city is ordering under the county’s bid. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff noted the long-standing practice of ordering a small overage (5–10 tons) historically to avoid being invoiced for more than approved quantities. The public-works supervisor judged the proposed order sufficient given existing stockpile levels.
The council approved the purchase by motion and second; staff will continue to coordinate delivery and inventory management with the county procurement invoicing process.
