The Tonganoxie City Council unanimously approved a resolution awarding the Front Street Improvements construction contract to Kansas Heavy Construction LLC for $556,738, significantly below the engineer’s estimate of about $815,000.
City staff described the project as a complete reconstruction of curb, street surface, addition of a sidewalk and installation of missing stormwater infrastructure along Front Street between Ridge Street and Tonganoxie Drive near the city’s new dog park. Seven bidders submitted full bids; the low bidder was the most local firm and listed several local subcontractors.
Staff told the council that work likely would not begin on site until February or March of next year, weather permitting, and that the city plans to order long-lead items such as concrete and stormwater commodities this year. Because the low bid came in well under the city’s estimate and available funds, staff said the council may later consider an addendum to add work scope—such as additional stormwater or pedestrian improvements on Ridge Street—if feasible before construction begins.
Councilmembers moved and seconded the resolution; the motion passed unanimously. The resolution was identified in the meeting as 10-25-01. Staff and BG Consultants will continue coordination with the contractor on scheduling and potential scope additions if funds and timing allow.
