Tonganoxie council approves special-use permit for daycare in historic business district

The Tonganoxie City Council on Oct. 20 approved a special-use permit allowing Adventure Awaits LLC to operate a daycare at 628 East Fourth Street in the city’s historic business district. The Planning Commission had unanimously recommended approval and no protest petition was filed, so a majority vote of the council was sufficient.

The permit application and staff report include conditions of approval listed as items a through k; staff noted those conditions are included in the packet and are part of the approval. The applicant, Desiree Kenny, was present and available to answer council questions, according to the staff report.

Councilmembers moved and seconded the measure and voted “aye.” The ordinance number cited during the meeting was draft ordinance 15 35. The staff report states the special-use permit applies to an existing business and facility at the listed address and that the Planning Commission reviewed the item before city council consideration.

No protest petition was filed during the 14-day protest period required for the matter, which meant the council did not need a supermajority to act. Staff told the council the standard staff conditions attached to the permit are detailed in the packet and that staff were available to answer follow-up questions.

The council’s vote was procedural and final for the permit; no other actions on this agenda item were recorded.
