Yuba City Council accepts $100,000 Office of Traffic Safety STEP grant for directed enforcement

The Yuba City Council voted to accept a $100,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for the 2025–26 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP), authorizing the police department to use the funds for overtime directed enforcement.
In a public presentation, Sergeant Krause explained STEP funds pay officers overtime to conduct focused operations—DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols, distracted‑driver details, bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement, motorcycle safety, and street‑racing/sideshow enforcement. He said the grant can also fund collaborative enforcement with neighboring agencies and pay for equipment such as in‑vehicle radar devices and checkpoint supplies; no city match is required.
Krause highlighted the department’s prior use of OTS funding, noting Yuba City’s traffic enforcement leadership among similar agencies in the region for DUI activity. He said grant funding can be used for checkpoint supplies, officer travel for training, and vehicle radar units (which he estimated at $12,000–$15,000 each).
During the meeting no members of the public offered comments on the item. Council adopted the resolution authorizing the chief of police to accept the STEP grant, approve related expenditures and establish the appropriation in the city budget. Council recorded the motion, a second, and a voice vote; the mayor announced the motion carried.
The grant acceptance authorizes the police department to proceed with targeted enforcement operations and to pursue collaborative details with neighboring jurisdictions, subject to grant terms and reimbursement procedures.
