Committee recommends Dawn Merritt for Hartford Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission

The Public Works, Parks, Recreation and Environment Committee voted Oct. 22 to send to the full City Council a favorable recommendation for Mayor's resolution confirming Dawn Merritt's appointment to the Hartford Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission.
Dawn Merritt addressed the committee, saying she moved to Hartford from Dobbs Ferry, New York as a "COVID transplant" and has spent about four years volunteering in and using city parks. "I'm in the parks every day, 3 times a day," Merritt said. She described prior volunteer stewardship in New York and said she wants to bring that experience to Hartford, to help restore neighborhood parks and support the parks department's policies and procedures.
Council members praised Merritt's enthusiasm. Councilman John Gale told Merritt the council stands ready to assist the commission if council action is needed to advance its agenda. Councilman Alex Thomas echoed Gale, saying he appreciated her passion and that designers Olmsted had a historical connection to both New York Central Park and Bushnell Park, which Merritt referenced.
A committee member made a motion to send the appointment resolution to the full council with a favorable recommendation; the motion was seconded and passed with no recorded opposition. The appointment will be considered at the full City Council meeting.
