Hopkins recognizes record AP participation and student exam results

The board recognized dozens of Hopkins students who earned College Board AP Scholar awards; administrators said AP exam participation and passing rates rose and the district administered a record number of tests last summer.
Hopkins School Board members on Oct. 21 recognized more than 100 students who earned College Board Advanced Placement honors after a year in which the district reported record exam participation and strong pass rates.
District staff said nearly 705 students took AP exams last year and that Hopkins administered 1,166 AP tests, representing a 32% increase in exams administered over the previous year and a 26% increase in the number of students taking at least one AP course or exam. Staff reported an overall pass rate (score of 3 or higher) of about 79%, an increase of 2 percentage points from the prior year.
The superintendent thanked AP teachers and the AP coordinator, John Samler, for their work supporting student success. Administrators singled out several high‑performing courses: Spanish literature and U.S. government had exceptionally high pass rates; U.S. history and AP Chinese also posted strong averages.
The board recognized students in the College Board categories of AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor and AP Scholar with Distinction — distinctions based on the number of exams taken and average exam scores. Eighteen students qualified for AP Scholar with Distinction, and 128 students received College Board awards overall this year.
Trustees praised both student achievement and teacher preparation and urged families to encourage peers who may be able to challenge themselves with AP coursework. The district noted that AP registration deadlines for the upcoming term were imminent.
