Hopkins board welcomes new student reps, discusses expanding student voice districtwide

The Hopkins School Board on Oct. 21 welcomed two new ninth‑grade student board representatives and heard plans to expand student voice beyond the high school, including pilot ambassador groups for middle and eventually elementary schools.

Board members and returning student reps introduced themselves and described the purposes of the student board representative program, which the board said has run for 26 years. Incoming students — who introduced themselves and their pronouns — said they joined to bring leadership and student perspectives to district conversations.

Iris, a returning student rep, said she has begun pilot visits to North Middle School and Eisenhower Elementary and recommended creating student ambassador groups to allow high‑school reps to meet with younger students and administrators. Manuel outlined efforts to make committee participation more feasible for students by offering asynchronous options such as commentable Google Docs for the monitoring committee and adjusting committee meeting times when possible.

Board members described clerk and treasurer duties to orient the new reps, urged them to ask questions during meetings and invited student reps to bring reports as well as questions for district staff. Trustees encouraged the new reps to weigh in on policy and to help broaden student engagement across elementary and middle schools.

The board said it will continue to refine onboarding documentation and to consider committee assignments in January with the aim of making student participation more accessible and meaningful.
