Assistant superintendent reports on Right to Read training, assessments and distance learning submission to state
Summary
The district reported progress on staff training under the state Right to Read mandate, completion of i-Ready assessments for most grades, and that the distance learning plan was submitted to the Rhode Island Department of Education for approval. At the meeting the assistant superintendent reported that the district has submitted its distance learning plan to the Rhode Island Department of Education for approval and is moving forward on multiple curriculum and assessment tasks.
Assistant Superintendent Ms. Seitzinger told the committee that 84% of faculty members and support staff have completed the required training under the district’s implementation of the state “right to read” mandate. “We have 84% of our faculty members, including support staff, who have completed that training,” Ms. Seitzinger said. She added that a secondary-level cohort, including special educators, is currently completing training.
Ms. Seitzinger also said i-Ready benchmark assessments have been completed for most students, with kindergarten testing still finishing. That data will be used to target interventions and differentiate instruction. The district has begun “learning walks” at the high school and elementary schools to observe and develop best instructional practices across content areas, and professional learning will continue.
Superintendent remarks in the packet included a request to approve a job description for a co-curricular after-school environmental education program coordinator at Birchwood Middle School; the committee approved that job description later in the meeting.
The assistant superintendent also reported on a recent “pink out” day and noted October is National Principals Month; final participation or fundraising numbers for the pink out day were not available at the meeting.
