County staff to identify roads and coordinate with DOT before adopting no‑through‑truck ordinance

Commissioners received an update on efforts to finalize a county ordinance prohibiting through truck traffic on selected roads. Staff said a review of past minutes identified only two roads -- Wrightsville Road and Caldwell Road -- that were officially designated; staff also observed numerous unsigned or partially signed roads that require field documentation.
Staff said District Attorney Herb Cranford advised coordination with county attorneys, the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) to ensure any ordinance complies with state law and with signage requirements. Staff noted some existing signs face only one direction and that proper signage requires placement where crossing roads meet the prohibited route so drivers are adequately notified.
Because staff needs additional time to identify all roads with existing signage and prepare ordinance language in the correct format, the board agreed to reschedule the item for the Oct. 28 meeting so public works and legal review can be completed. No ordinance was adopted at this meeting.
A commissioner noted prior minutes referenced an ordinance from 2002 prohibiting through truck traffic for trucks with more than two axles, but staff said they could not find an official adoption record and that prior actions appear limited to discussion or withholding a second reading.
