CalPERS’ State Social Security Administrator (SSSA) explained the annual AIR (Annual Information Request) process and recent federal changes affecting employees in noncovered public positions.
“CalPERS was assigned the role of the State Social Security Administrator … by the governor in 1955,” said Alexis de la Pena. She walked attendees through how to obtain myCalPERS access, how to locate the AIR link on the Profile page, and how county offices of education receive invoices and AIR links. She advised agencies to contact the state administrator team to add a business partner Social Security access role to their myCalPERS account.
De la Pena said the Social Security Administration updated the SSA‑1945 form to reference the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). She described the Social Security Fairness Act, signed Jan. 5, 2025, which repealed WEP and GPO retroactive to benefits payable for January 2024, and said the SSA is developing procedures and automated solutions and has urged patience as implementation proceeds.
She reminded employers that the AIR must be completed online in myCalPERS within 30 days of issuance and that county offices receive invoices for districts alphabetically. The SSSA team said they will offer a June webinar with step‑by‑step AIR completion guidance.
