The Guymon Convention & Tourism Board on May 16 approved payment of a $29,318.22 final report for lighting and window work at the Rodeo Arena, board members said during a regular meeting at Guymon City Hall.
Volunteers who led the arena project described a package of improvements that included new windows at the announcer stand, a small roof extension over a VIP deck, new LED lights and new stalls and pens. “We also put a new roof, extended the roof over that VIP deck area,” said Ginger, who identified herself as the project president and spoke to the board during the meeting. She told board members the windows were part of a larger remodel of the announcer stand.
The board’s vote followed a discussion of remaining problems and next steps. Ginger told the board that, while the new LEDs are brighter and an improvement over the old fixtures, some of the lighting poles are mounted too low and cause glare for fans in the grandstands. “One of the issues is the poles on the ground are too short. So if you’re sitting at the grandstands, the way those lights are pointed… they kinda get you right now,” she said.
Ginger said volunteers have already begun talks with TCEC about relocating several poles and adjusting light placements to reduce shadows and glare. She also said the project uses the same lighting controller system as another city complex and that volunteers expect donated labor and donated materials to contribute to the work. Ginger provided an estimate for the combined work—including new pens, stalls, and lighting—saying it would be “somewhere around a hundred thousand dollars per month,” and described that amount as an estimate tied to materials and donated labor.
Ursula Wilson, the meeting chairwoman, moved the final payment recommendation through the board process. A board member made a motion “to approve their final report and get them paid,” which was seconded; the board recorded votes from Wilson, Redcorn, Gutierrez, Carrasco and Stover during the roll call and the chair declared the motion passed, noting “We have 4 ayes.”
Board members thanked volunteers for their work and discussed using convention and tourism funds and future budgeting to support longer-term arena improvements. Ginger told the board she expects follow-up meetings of the rodeo committee to prioritize additional projects including donated steel materials for a new north-side deck and possible seating rearrangements.
The board did not adopt a new funding commitment beyond approving the final report payment; members discussed holding a planning meeting to identify longer-term capital needs and potential budget set-asides.
The arena improvements and the board’s approval of the final report conclude the current phase of the project; volunteers and staff said they will return with further recommendations and cost estimates for additional work.
