Sierra Vista outlines ADOT repaving, downtown streetscape and two community events

Adam Curtis, communications manager for the City of Sierra Vista, told listeners that Arizona Department of Transportation crews are repaving the arterial corridor east of Fry’s and Target and will extend work north to Mohsen Road.
“It is an ADOT owned and maintained roadway…They actually ended up expanding it,” Curtis said, noting the work has included night paving and planned additional repaving near the hospital and in front of Target and Fry’s.
Curtis described a city‑led Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway phase that temporarily closes two southbound lanes while maintaining two‑way traffic on the north lanes. “It does kinda interfere with some business access…expect through mid‑August,” he said. He advised some shoppers to use Avenida Escuela for access during construction.
Why it matters: lane closures and one‑way controls alter access to businesses and hospitals; Curtis emphasized that hospital access will be maintained but different entrances may be closed at different times.
On North Garden Avenue, Curtis said a long‑planned streetscape project will add landscaping, sidewalks and a bike path; the current phase is one‑way northbound traffic only and is expected to last two to three months, with the broader project running through December. The work follows local facade‑matching grants that the city says helped spur private investment in the West End.
Curtis also promoted two upcoming events: the Wine, Beer & Spirits Festival in Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, May 24, noon–7 p.m., and the Sky Island Summit Challenge, a multi‑peak hiking fundraiser with registration handled through Active.com. He reported about 220 registered for the hike and a capacity of about 250.
