Doctor Hillman and Assistant Superintendent Lawson explained that the high school has been working on the requirement for about two years and that the course is indeed a state requirement that will affect freshmen who enter in the 2026-27 school year. Lawson said the requirement is for one semester and that the number of sections will depend on staffing and the master schedule.
Lawson told trustees there remains some work before final approval of a course outline and staffing plan, and the district will return with those specifics later. The board approved the item by roll call and recorded a 5-0 vote.
The item authorizes the district to proceed with course development and scheduling steps necessary to meet the state timeline for incoming freshmen; staff noted the final staffing and number of sections will be determined as part of master scheduling and site plans.
