Cookeville City Council on April 17 approved a resolution allowing the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport to apply for a federal safety improvement grant and committing a local match share if the grant is awarded.
Mayor Lauren Wheaton, who presented the item, said the airport operates under an interlocal agreement among Cookeville, Sparta, Putnam County and White County and that the airport requested local commitments to cover up to $600,000 in one-time matching funds for the proposed grant. Wheaton said the $600,000 match is proposed to be funded by four governments and the airport general fund — five equal shares of $120,000 each — and that Cookeville’s commitment would be $120,000 if the grant is awarded.
Wheaton asked the council to approve Resolution R25-0406 so the airport could apply for the grant; Councilman Bhatti moved approval and Councilman Walker seconded. The council voted 5–0.
The resolution authorized the airport to apply and signaled Cookeville’s willingness to appropriate the city's portion of the local match if the grant is awarded; the council action does not itself appropriate funds. The airport’s application and any subsequent award will determine whether and when the local match is required.
