On May 7 the Transportation Economic Development Subcommittee received the quarterly report on shelter and rehousing investments from the Housing and Community Services Department and the committee acknowledged receipt on May 16.
Representative Gomberg presented the report and said goals established for rehousing and shelter-bed creation have been surpassed overall, though communities vary in their progress. Gomberg said the department is reallocating funds between communities to ensure all appropriated funds are expended by June 30, 2025. The report shows that as of March 31, only about 15% of funds for longer-term rental assistance programs have been expended; eviction-prevention funds, by contrast, are on track to be fully expended and to serve nearly 12,000 households.
Representative Kate registered a no vote on acknowledging the report, saying she remains concerned about whether the investments are achieving the intended outcomes. "I will be a no vote on the receipt of this report just out of flagging that," Kate said, adding that she does not believe the agency has demonstrated sufficient effectiveness. Other members accepted the report for the record.
The committee accepted the report; members noted it was the last required quarterly report but acknowledged the department may provide follow-up reports and that some payments will carry over into the 2025-27 biennium to allow placement of households through June 30.
