City staff briefed the South Charleston City Council on a range of recreation and community items, including hiring lifeguards, pool and camp dates, discussions with WU Medicine about the recreation facility, playground installation, and safety concerns at the farmers market.
A staff member said the city is still seeking lifeguards and that Little Creek pool is scheduled to open May 24. The staff member also said a basketball camp run by Aliyah Dunham will be held at the recreation center on May 31 and that South Charleston Middle School cheerleaders will run a car wash the same day. "Little Creek pool is gonna open May 24," the staff member said.
The staff member reported two meetings with WU Medicine about the health and wellness component of the proposed recreation facility; the meetings covered sports-medicine participation and possible space in the facility but did not yield a finalized agreement. "I've had now 2 meetings with WU Medicine about their participation in the health and wellness part of our facility," the staff member said. "They're very, very interested... We have 2 good meetings with them and then the interest is there and then we'll see."
Council members and staff also discussed recent playground work performed by Jake's crew; Laura noted the playground structure is installed though the underlayment had not yet been completed. Council members praised public-works employees for repairing a collapsed storm drain near a private property that had been causing erosion toward a backyard; a resident expressed gratitude for the crew's work.
A question arose about pedestrian safety at the farmers market near Route 60. The staff member said the road in question is a State of West Virginia Department of Highways facility but that the city will pursue appropriate measures: "I've got to be a little bit careful what we do because it's not our road... It's a Department of Highway State of West Virginia Road, but there there is a need for 1 there. We're gonna we're gonna go ahead and do that."
The council also noted farmers market signage and upcoming community events including a parade and Armed Forces Day at noon on Saturday. No formal council action was taken on the recreation items during the report; staff said it will call another recreation committee meeting to update members on facility progress.
