Jackson County Board approves multiple retirements, resignations and personnel moves ahead of summer

The Jackson County Board of Education approved a slate of end-of-year personnel actions Monday, accepting multiple retirements effective June 1, approving grouped resignations and nonrenewals, and authorizing transfers, hires and a coaching appointment.
Board members voted, by voice, to accept retirements effective 06/01/2025 for Bradley Kober (teacher, Pisgah High School), Valerie Smith (teacher, North Sand Mountain High School), Alicia Young (special education teacher, Hollywood School), Melinda Rogers (librarian, Stevens Elementary School), Jackie Goins (counselor, Kevin Dukes Career and Innovation Academy), Maria O'Hagan (countywide EL bilingual paraprofessional) and Patricia Carol Kirk (countywide school nurse). The board also accepted retirements for Jennifer Johnson (teacher, Section High School) and Phyllis Wheaton (secretary, Pisgah High School) with stated effective dates in June/July 2025.
A board member moved to accept grouped resignations listed in agenda items a through f; the motion carried by voice vote. The board then approved nonrenewals of certified personnel effective 05/28/2025 and nonrenewals of noncertified personnel effective May 2025, also by voice vote.
On transfers and employments, the board approved the transfer of Christy Gorham from a split counselor assignment (50% Section High School/50% Dutton School) to a split assignment (50% Macedonia School/50% Dutton School) effective 07/30/2025; one board member abstained from that vote. The board also approved grouped transfers (items b through n), grouped employments (items a through j), and a coaching assignment naming Charles Dutton as head girls basketball coach at Section High School.
Most personnel items passed on general voice votes with the board citing routine end-of-year staffing changes. No discussion of individual personnel performance or contested hearings was recorded in the meeting transcript.
