Board approves developer easement and potential donation adjacent to Smyrna High School

The Rutherford County School Board approved a temporary construction easement and an amendment to an existing option agreement for property adjacent to Smyrna High School that is being developed into a shopping center anchored by Kroger.
Staff told the board the developer has agreed to complete road improvements at the developer’s cost to improve traffic flow near the school and requests a temporary construction easement for that work. The developer also agreed to honor the board’s existing option to purchase the property but requested that the exercise of the option be classified as a donation for tax purposes.
Board members welcomed the donation proposal and encouraged other businesses to consider donating land as a way to support school facilities. "I hope that other businesses will think about donating land to the school as they are proposing to donate a parcel," one board member said.
The board voted to approve the easement and option amendment. Staff noted the item was discussed at the Monday work session and that the developer will complete road improvements.
