Mount Vernon to administer $60,000 NRPA youth mentoring grant covering 2025–2027

The Mount Vernon City Council on May 14 authorized the mayor to execute a memorandum of understanding with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) after staff said the Recreation Division received a $60,000 youth mentoring grant.
Finance Director Doug Valeski told council the grant covers the recreation leader position for the supervised playground program and provides $8,000 per year for recreation coordinator salaries and supplies. The $60,000 is distributed over May 2025 through September 2027 and requires no city matching funds, Valeski said.
Staff reviewed current programs and modified them to meet grant requirements by incorporating mentorship elements into the supervised playground, environmental stewardship, Big Hitters and Little Kickers programs. Council approved the MOU in open session; staff said no additional city funds are required to administer the grant.
