Appling County commissioners authorized several agreements with the city of Baxley: signing a deed to transfer the Oak Street building that houses sheriff's investigators, asking the county attorney to draft an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) concerning the police department's current building, and approving an IGA to allow the city to use the county's permitted burn site.
County staff said the Oak Street building deed transfer would allow the city to take ownership of property currently housing sheriff's office investigators; the transfer and the IGA for the police building are intended to maintain law enforcement presence on both sides of the city. The board authorized the chairman to sign the deed and directed the county attorney to prepare the IGA.
Separately, staff reported that the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) told county staff the county could grant the city permission to use the county's permitted burn site; the city would use its own equipment and contractors and accept liability. Commissioners approved entering into an IGA to allow the city to use the burn site for stump pickup operations for an initial period (staff mentioned 30-60 days subject to EPD check-ins).
The board moved, seconded and approved each action. Staff will coordinate with city officials and the county attorney to finalize transfer documents and IGAs.
