Mount Vernon authorizes sole-source purchase of SEW Eurodrive reducer to reduce biosolids hauling costs

The Mount Vernon City Council on May 14 authorized the mayor to declare FKC Company LTD a sole-source supplier and to enter an agreement to buy one SEW Eurodrive gear reducer and adapter assembly not to exceed $53,000, excluding shipping and tax.
Public Works Director Chris Phillips told council the SEW Eurodrive assembly is required for the city’s FKC screw press at the wastewater treatment plant. He said the new drive would allow the screw press to operate at a lower speed and produce drier biosolids, which staff estimates would reduce hauling costs by about $40,000 per year.
Phillips said the sole-source purchase is allowable under the state procurement statute cited in staff materials (RCW 39.04.280(1)(a) as referenced during discussion) because the product is available only through one supplier and the vendor provided a sole-source certification. Council moved, seconded and approved the authorization in open session.
Staff recommended the purchase as a cost-saving operational investment; the council approved the resolution authorizing the mayor to execute the purchase agreement.
