The DeSoto County School District Board of Education approved a multi-page personnel package that included new positions, schedule changes and supplemental pay for summer work and specialized duties.
The packet presented to the board included requests from the director of special education, the director of federal programs and other administrators. Items approved included adding a therapeutic social worker position, two additional therapeutic interventionists, a special-education supervisor position to be paid from federal funds, and additions to Project Connect staffing. The board also approved requests to increase supplemental pay for teacher assistants who handle body fluids from 5% to 10% and to add a $3,000 supplement for teachers in certain designated secondary special-education classrooms; teacher assistants in those rooms were to be paid a 20% supplement.
Several schedule and days-of-work changes were approved: increases from 187 to 230 days for at least one psychologist and one occupational therapist to allow summer assessment work; additional summer hours across multiple special-education evaluations and services (speech, audiology, psychology, early intervention); and specific requests for additional days or hours for newly assigned principals and administrators.
Transportation-related personnel items were included: approval to pay $40 per day for new bus drivers and bus aides attending required in-service training, approved supplemental pay for ESY (extended school year) transportation and wash-crew hourly pay of $12. Pages in the packet also detailed summer professional-development hours for federal programs staff at $30 per hour and summer reading camp staffing hours.
Board members moved and seconded the personnel recommendation, and the motion passed by voice vote with no opposition. The approvals were recorded as personnel actions; the meeting did not include full job descriptions or individual employee names beyond the memos in the packet.
