CUSD 200 awards $1.36 million summer paving contract to Abbey Paving after Evans & Sons withdraws bid

The CUSD 200 Board of Education on May 14 accepted the voluntary withdrawal of Evans & Sons' bid for the district's summer 2025 paving contract and voted to award the base bid plus six alternates to Abbey Paving Solutions of Aurora, Illinois, for $1,356,616.
Superintendent Doctor Schuler told the board that Evans & Sons “voluntarily withdrew their bids,” and staff recommended the board accept the withdrawal and authorize a new contract with Abbey. The matter came before the board after district staff met with Abbey’s ownership group, who confirmed they could complete the scope of work and were building a schedule.
A district staff member said the price difference between Abbey and Evans was small: "It was less than a $4,000 difference in aggregates between Abbey Paving and Evans and Sons." Trustees noted Abbey has completed district work in prior years, including paving and concrete projects at multiple schools.
The board approved a motion to accept the withdrawal of Evans' bid and then approved awarding the contract to Abbey Paving by roll call vote. The motion to award the work was moved by a board member and seconded by another; the roll call on the contract award returned unanimous approval.
What will happen next: staff said Abbey is preparing a summer schedule and will perform the paving and concrete work across district sites, including Wheaton North. The contract award covers the base bid and six alternate bid items; staff said the work is planned for this summer.
