DAV Chapter 17 appeals to St. John Township for support of Aug. 23 veterans walk

Representatives of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17 briefed the St. John Town Council on May 14 about the chapter's August 23 walk and asked the township and residents to consider sponsorship or individual support.
Kathy LaRue, St. John Township trustee, introduced DAV Chapter 17's commander, Robert Carnegie, and service officer Steve Brahmer. Carnegie described the chapter's mission to identify veterans and assist them in claiming Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. "If veterans don't take advantage of those benefits, they just go away," Carnegie said, and he noted the chapter receives no government funding and relies on donations.
Service officer Steve Raymer said the DAV also helps veterans with emergency needs such as rent and utilities and that the organization has expanded local outreach since partnering with the township. The presenters provided flyers and sponsorship forms and asked the council and residents to consider sponsoring or attending the walk.
Township and council members thanked the presenters but did not take any formal action or commit township funds during the meeting. Several council members said they planned to attend or sponsor individually.
The walk is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 23; the DAV materials provided at the meeting state funds raised support veterans within the township and public outreach about available VA benefits.
