The Clarksburg City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to name an unnamed 16‑foot alley running parallel to North Florence Street as Cooper Way in honor of John H. Cooper Jr.
The resolution, read aloud during the meeting, describes Cooper as a lifelong Clarksburg resident who retired as superintendent of the Board of Park Commissioners after more than 42 years of service. The text says Cooper “was instrumental in many of the park projects such as the aquatic park, the amphitheater, the Frank Loria baseball field, and indoor baseball facility, and the mini golf course.” The resolution also said the name will help emergency services and the county’s emergency dispatch better identify the location.
Council members spoke in support of the naming and shared personal recollections of Cooper’s contributions to parks and community life. The council approved the resolution by voice vote. Several council members suggested future recognitions such as naming additional park facilities after Cooper; no formal motion on further namings was made at the meeting.
